What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It contains 50 single-answer questions and no proctor is required.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is open book, so you can refer to materials during the assessment.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The exam is available online within 90 days of completing your CSM course.

What if I do not pass the CSM exam first time?

Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of course completion. Our trainers and practice materials are designed to help you clear the online assessment on your first attempt, so there is little to worry about.

Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The Scrum Alliance exam cannot be accessed without completing the course, which unlocks the exam within 90 days.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers the six CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, the five Scrum events, the three artifacts and their commitments, and the Scrum Master role, including servant leadership and facilitation.

Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

No prior experience is required. The CSM is a foundational certification, so beginners are welcome. It also suits those already working in Scrum teams who want to formalise their knowledge with a recognised credential.

How long is the CSM training?

The CSM programme runs for 16 hours of instruction, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement for the CSM course.
