The Observability Skills You Will BuildFrom the Three Pillars to SLOs

Skills covered in the Observability Foundation course span the full observability lifecycle, from instrumenting systems to running blameless incident reviews. By the end, you can implement and reason about observability in cloud-native environments.

    The Three Pillars of Observability

Understand how metrics, logs and distributed traces work together, and how observability differs from traditional monitoring in cloud-native and microservices systems.

    Metrics and the Golden Signals

Work with counters, gauges and histograms, and apply the RED, USE and Four Golden Signals methods to measure what your users actually experience.

    Structured Logging and Log Aggregation

Design structured, high-context logs and aggregate them for fast querying and root-cause analysis across distributed services.

    Distributed Tracing with OpenTelemetry

Instrument services using OpenTelemetry, propagate trace context, and correlate traces with metrics and logs to pinpoint failures quickly.

SLIs, SLOs, SLAs and Error Budgets

Define service-level indicators and objectives that matter to users, and use error budgets to balance reliability against delivery speed.

    Alerting and Incident Response

Move from noisy alerts to burn-rate alerting, run effective on-call rotations, and lead blameless postmortems that build a learning culture.

What is the passing score for the exam?

The passing score is 65%, meaning you must answer at least 26 of the 40 questions correctly. Because the paper is open book, broad understanding of the observability blueprint matters more than memorisation.

How is the Observability Foundation exam delivered?

The exam is delivered online with remote proctoring through PeopleCert OnVUE, or at an authorised test centre. You can sit it from home or office in Thailand, subject to the DevOps Institute's exam policies.

What does the Observability Foundation exam cover?

The exam follows the current Observability Foundation Body of Knowledge across six modules: observability principles and the three pillars; metrics, logs and tracing; SLIs, SLOs, SLAs and error budgets; OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines; alerting and incident response; and SRE, AIOps and exam prep.

What if I do not pass on the first attempt?

If you do not pass the first time, you can re-sit the exam under the DevOps Institute's re-sit policy. Our trainers provide targeted guidance and additional practice to help you prepare for a confident retake. Confirm current re-sit terms when you book.
