The Observability Skills You Will BuildPractical, Tool-Agnostic and Job-Ready

This course builds hands-on observability capability aligned to the DevOps Institute Observability Foundation Body of Knowledge. By the end, you can instrument systems, define reliable SLOs, and diagnose failures across distributed, cloud-native environments.

Master the Three Pillars of Observability

Skills covered in the Observability Foundation training start with the three pillars: metrics, logs and distributed traces. You will learn how each works, how they differ from traditional monitoring, and how to combine them for full-context insight into system behaviour.

    Instrument Systems with OpenTelemetry

Use OpenTelemetry, the vendor-neutral CNCF standard, to collect telemetry across services, and design telemetry pipelines with head-based, tail-based and dynamic sampling that keep high-cardinality data affordable.

Define SLIs, SLOs and Error Budgets

Set service-level indicators and objectives from the user's perspective, use error budgets to balance reliability against delivery speed, and connect SLOs to the SLA commitments your organisation makes to customers.

    Build Alerting and Incident Response

Move from noisy alert-on-symptom to burn-rate alerting, design on-call rotations that reduce fatigue, and run blameless post-mortems and runbooks that turn incidents into continuous learning.

    Correlate Telemetry for Root-Cause Analysis

Bring metrics, logs and traces together to find the root cause of novel failures fast, using spans, trace context and flame graphs across distributed, microservices-based systems.

Apply Observability in SRE and AIOps

See how observability underpins mature site reliability engineering and AIOps, from anomaly detection to capacity planning, and prepare for the 40-question, open-book Observability Foundation exam.
