Observability Foundation (OBSF) is a vendor-neutral credential from the DevOps Institute that validates a foundational understanding of the concepts, practices and tools needed to implement observability in modern IT environments. It covers the three pillars of metrics, logs and traces, SLIs, SLOs, OpenTelemetry and observability culture.

    General

What is the Observability Foundation certification?

Observability Foundation (OBSF) is a vendor-neutral credential from the DevOps Institute that validates a foundational understanding of the concepts, practices and tools needed to implement observability in modern IT environments. It covers the three pillars of metrics, logs and traces, SLIs, SLOs, OpenTelemetry and observability culture.

Who is the OBSF certification for?

It is designed for DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, platform engineers, software developers and IT operations staff who want to improve system reliability. It also suits technical leads and managers overseeing observability tooling and practices.

Is Observability Foundation worth it in Zimbabwe?

Yes. As Zimbabwe's telecoms, banks, fintechs and data centres modernise and move to the cloud, employers need engineers who can keep distributed systems reliable. OBSF is a recognised, globally portable credential that opens SRE, platform and observability roles.

Who governs the Observability Foundation certification?

The certification is offered by the DevOps Institute, a global professional membership body, with exams delivered through PeopleCert. Invensis Learning is an Authorized Training Provider delivering courseware aligned to the official DevOps Institute Exam Blueprint.

Are there any prerequisites for OBSF?

No. Observability Foundation has no formal prerequisites and is open to all. Familiarity with DevOps concepts or IT operations is helpful but not required, so beginners moving into reliability roles can take it.

How long is the OBSF certification valid?

The certification is valid for three years. It is renewed by earning the required Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through DevOps Institute membership and continuing education activities within each three-year cycle.

    Exam

What is the format of the Observability Foundation exam?

The OBSF exam has 40 single-answer, multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. It is an open-book exam based on the Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint and Body of Knowledge published by the DevOps Institute.

What is the passing score for the OBSF exam?

The passing score is 65 per cent, which means answering at least 26 of the 40 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across the three pillars, SLIs and SLOs, OpenTelemetry and alerting.

    How is the exam delivered?

The exam is delivered online through PeopleCert OnVUE proctoring or at an authorised test centre, so you can sit it from home, the office or a centre. Our team can guide you through registration.

What if I do not pass the exam the first time?

You can resit the exam under the DevOps Institute re-sit policy. Our training includes mock exams and first-attempt guidance to help you prepare thoroughly and build confidence before exam day.

Which standard is the OBSF exam based on?

The exam is based on the current Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint and Body of Knowledge from the DevOps Institute. It covers observability principles, the three pillars, SLIs, SLOs, OpenTelemetry, alerting and SRE practices.

    Course Content

What topics does the OBSF training cover?

The training covers all six modules: observability principles and the three pillars; metrics, logs and distributed tracing; SLIs, SLOs and error budgets; OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines; alerting and incident response; and SRE, AIOps and exam preparation.

Do I need prior DevOps experience to take this course?

No prior experience is required. The course starts with observability fundamentals and builds up, so beginners can follow along while experienced engineers formalise their knowledge. Familiarity with IT operations is a helpful bonus.

What is observability and how does it differ from monitoring?

Observability is the ability to understand a system's internal state from its external outputs. Monitoring tells you when something is wrong; observability helps you understand why, including novel failures you did not predict, using metrics, logs and traces.

Are practice tests and case studies included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and mock exams aligned to the 40-question format, plus industry case studies on metrics, logs, traces and service-level objectives to connect the concepts to real scenarios.

How long is the Observability Foundation training?

The instructor-led programme runs for 16 hours, usually delivered as two full days or four half-days. It covers all six exam modules and prepares you for the 40-question, 60-minute open-book exam.
