What Is Value Stream Mapping and How Does It Work?A Core Lean Technique for Operational Flow

Value Stream Mapping Training in Hungary gives you a practical, hands-on way to see how work really flows across your operations and where value is lost. In a single focused day, you learn to map, analyse and improve the flow of materials and information that brings a product or service to the customer. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique rooted in the Toyota Production System and popularised for practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 guide Learning to See. It is a non-certification skills course: there is no exam and no external awarding body. Instead, you build a workplace capability grounded in the five Lean principles and the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), and you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. The training suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, process engineers and supply chain professionals. For Hungary's automotive, electronics and shared-service employers, VSM is the diagnostic tool that turns delivery pressure into a clear, prioritised improvement plan. Start building the skill with Invensis Learning.

Skills You Will Build in This Value Stream Mapping CourseCurrent-State to Future-State Mapping

This training moves you through the full VSM cycle in a single practical day, from Lean foundations and symbols to current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning. You practise on realistic scenarios so you leave able to facilitate mapping in your own workplace.

Read and Frame a Value Stream

Understand what you will learn in a VSM programme: the five Lean principles, the eight wastes (DOWNTIME), and how to tell value-added, non-value-added and necessary non-value-added activity apart from the customer's point of view.

    Apply the Standard VSM Symbols

Use the standard symbol set to represent process boxes, material and information flow, inventory triangles, kanban, data boxes and Kaizen bursts, so any team can read and build a consistent map.

    Build an Accurate Current-State Map

Select a product family, walk the value stream at the Gemba, and capture real cycle time, changeover, uptime, batch size and inventory to complete a timeline of value-added time against total lead time.

Analyse Waste and Find the Bottleneck

Read the current-state map to expose the eight wastes, calculate takt time, compare push against pull, identify the constraint that limits flow, and prioritise the highest-impact improvement opportunities.

    Design a Leaner Future-State Map

Apply the eight future-state questions to design for continuous flow, introduce pull systems and supermarkets, set a pacemaker and level the mix, then quantify the gain from current to future state.

    Plan and Sustain the Improvement

Translate the future-state map into an implementation roadmap and Kaizen event plan, set baseline metrics, and sustain gains with standard work so improvement becomes a repeatable discipline.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Value Stream Mapping is a Lean technique for visualising and improving the end-to-end flow of materials and information that delivers a product or service to the customer. The training is worth it because you gain a practical, transferable skill valued across Hungary's automotive, electronics and service sectors, where improving flow directly reduces cost and lead time.

    General

What is Value Stream Mapping and is the training worth it?

Value Stream Mapping is a Lean technique for visualising and improving the end-to-end flow of materials and information that delivers a product or service to the customer. The training is worth it because you gain a practical, transferable skill valued across Hungary's automotive, electronics and service sectors, where improving flow directly reduces cost and lead time.

Who should attend this Value Stream Mapping course?

It suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, supply chain and logistics professionals, and continuous improvement specialists. Anyone responsible for identifying and removing waste in a process flow will benefit, from shop floor to shared-service back office.

Do I need prior Lean experience to join?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste, flow and pull is helpful, but the course introduces all the concepts you need in the context of mapping, so beginners and experienced practitioners can both take part.

Which framework is the training based on?

The training is grounded in Lean and the Toyota Production System, and follows the approach popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 guide Learning to See. It uses the standard VSM symbol set and the five Lean principles as its foundation.

How long is the Value Stream Mapping training?

The programme runs for one day (eight hours), covering Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout the day.

    Pricing

How much does the Value Stream Mapping training cost in Hungary?

Pricing varies by delivery mode, group size and schedule, so individual and corporate rates differ. Fees are available on request. Contact a learning advisor for current pricing and to request a quote for your preferred format.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led sessions, structured courseware, hands-on mapping exercises, learning resources and templates, learner support, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Ask us for the full inclusions for your chosen format.

Do you offer group or corporate rates for teams?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with schedules and pricing tailored to your team size and site. Group delivery is especially cost-effective because your team maps a real value stream together. Ask about corporate and group pricing.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the arrangement that suits you or your organisation.

Is there a discount for enrolling a whole department?

Volume-based pricing is available for departments and multi-site teams. The larger the group, the more we can tailor the schedule and rate. Request a quote and we will build a proposal around your team.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the Value Stream Mapping training?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the day rather than a formal test.

Do I receive a certificate after completing the course?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. No external credential or certification is awarded, because VSM is a technique with no formal awarding body. The value is the practical skill you can apply immediately at work.

How is my learning checked during the training?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise by building both a current-state and a future-state map for realistic scenarios, with the trainer guiding and giving feedback throughout, so you confirm your skills by doing.

Will I be able to run a mapping session myself afterwards?

Yes. By the end you will be able to select a product family, run a Gemba walk, draw a current-state map, analyse waste, design a future-state map, and plan the improvements, so you can facilitate mapping for your own team.

Does the skill expire or need renewing?

No. Because there is no certification, there is nothing to renew. The mapping skills are immediately applicable and do not expire, and many teams simply repeat the VSM cycle every six to twelve months as they improve.

    Course Content

What topics does the Value Stream Mapping syllabus cover?

The syllabus covers Lean foundations and the eight wastes, the standard VSM symbols, creating and analysing the current-state map, calculating takt time and finding the bottleneck, designing the future-state map, and building an implementation and Kaizen plan.

Are the sessions hands-on or lecture-based?

They are hands-on. Alongside concise concept explanations, you spend significant time drawing real maps. You create both current-state and future-state maps for practical scenarios so you learn the technique by applying it.

    Does VSM apply outside manufacturing?

Yes. While it began on the factory floor, VSM applies to healthcare pathways, logistics, financial services, IT delivery and shared-service processes. Any environment with an end-to-end flow of work can be mapped and improved.

What materials do I get with the course?

You receive structured courseware, the standard VSM symbol reference, worked examples, and mapping templates you can reuse at work, along with post-training resources to support you as you apply the skill.

How does VSM fit with Lean Six Sigma or Kaizen?

VSM is a core Lean tool that complements Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen. It provides the diagnostic map that scopes DMAIC projects and defines which Kaizen events to run, making it a strong foundation for further Lean training.
