How to Get PMI-CP CertifiedStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-CP (PMI Construction Professional) certification path is a structured single-exam track. You must complete the four-module training, document 3 years of construction or built-environment project experience earned within the past 10 years, then pass the 120-question, 230-minute PMI-CP exam delivered by PMI through Pearson VUE. From initial training to earning the PMI-CP designation typically takes 1-3 months.

Step 1: Confirm You Meet the PMI-CP Eligibility Requirements

Confirm you can document 3 years of on-the-job experience in construction projects or built-environment projects (infrastructure, real estate, utilities, etc.). The experience must have been earned within the past 10 years. There is no foundational PMI credential prerequisite for PMI-CP.

Step 2: Enroll in a Learning Program

Choose a learning format that aligns with your schedule and goals, such as a PMI-CP bootcamp, live virtual training, self-paced learning, or corporate group training. Enrollment provides access to PMI-aligned learning resources, study materials, and expert guidance.

Step 3: Submit Your PMI-CP Application via the PMI Candidate Portal

Create or sign in to your PMI account at pmi.org, complete the PMI-CP application, and document your training (32 contact hours) plus 3 years of construction project experience earned within the past 10 years. PMI membership (~$139/year) is optional but reduces the exam fee.

Step 4: Receive Application Approval and Register for the Exam

PMI reviews your application within ~5 business days. On approval, you receive eligibility to register for the PMI-CP exam through Pearson VUE. Your eligibility window opens for 1 year, during which you can attempt the exam up to 3 times.

    Step 5: Sit the 120-Question, 230-Minute PMI-CP Exam

Book a Pearson VUE slot , online proctored from home or office or at a Pearson VUE test centre. The exam includes 120 multiple-choice and scenario questions across the four PMI-CP domains, delivered over 230 minutes. You receive your preliminary result at the end of the session.

Step 6: Earn the PMI-CP Designation and Plan CCR Renewal

After passing the exam, PMI issues your PMI-CP digital badge and certificate. The designation is valid for three years and is renewable via PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme by earning PDUs in construction and built-environment-relevant content across the 3-year cycle.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI-CP is the Project Management Institute's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates your ability to apply project management skills across the construction lifecycle, covering four ECO domains: Contracts Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Strategy and Scope Management, and Project Governance.

    General

What is the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) certification?

The PMI-CP is the Project Management Institute's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates your ability to apply project management skills across the construction lifecycle, covering four ECO domains: Contracts Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Strategy and Scope Management, and Project Governance.

Who should take PMI-CP certification training?

PMI-CP suits construction project managers, site and project engineers moving into project roles, owner's representatives and client-side PMs, construction programme managers, and PMP holders working in construction who want a construction-specific credential.

Is PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals?

Yes. PMI-CP proves construction-specific project management skill that employers recognize worldwide and positions you for senior roles where certified talent is scarce. In the US, construction project managers average around $110,000, with senior and director roles reaching well beyond $190,000. Talk to a learning advisor to plan your path.

Do I need a PMP before taking PMI-CP?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary, with the PMP validating broad project management and PMI-CP validating construction-specific expertise.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

PMI-CP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area, within the three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle. The 56 PDUs from the four required modules can be applied toward renewal.

    Is PMI-CP recognized internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, PMI-CP carries global recognition through PMI's network across more than 200 countries. It is valued in international construction markets where clients and contractors seek globally recognized project management credentials.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP certification training cost?

Training fees vary by format and are available on request. The training fee is separate from the PMI exam fee, which PMI bills directly in USD under regional pricing. Request a quote to see options for live online, classroom, and corporate delivery.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions and mock exams aligned to the 120-question format, guidance on the four required modules and the exam application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours.

How much is the PMI-CP exam fee?

For reference, PMI lists the exam at about USD 520 for members and USD 670 for non-members, though prices vary by region. Verify current fees at pmi.org. PMI individual membership (around USD 139 per year) can reduce the exam cost and provide access to PMI resources.

Are the four required modules included in the price?

The four mandatory self-paced modules are purchased through PMI, and their pricing varies by region and membership status. Our training guides you through completing them, but the module fees are billed by PMI, not included in the course fee. Ask an advisor for details.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customized schedules and volume-based pricing for construction teams, PMOs, and capital-program groups. Contact us for a tailored group quote.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline. It uses single-answer and multiple-answer questions delivered online via Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test center.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). Understanding the format helps you plan preparation and manage your time on exam day.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains in the PMI-CP ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%), and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is the largest, reflecting the centrality of contracts in construction delivery.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target, or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

What are the prerequisites to sit the PMI-CP exam?

You must complete all four self-paced course modules and meet one of three experience sets: a secondary diploma with 60 months of construction PM experience, a bachelor's degree with 36 months, or a GAC-accredited degree with 24 months. All sets require 35 contact hours of project management education.

What if I do not pass the exam? How many attempts do I get?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period from application approval. Re-examination fees apply to later attempts; confirm current amounts at pmi.org. Our practice questions and mock exams are designed to help you prepare with confidence.

    Course Content

What will I learn in PMI-CP training?

You will learn to manage construction contracts, change orders, and claims; engage owners, regulators, and communities; define and control scope, schedule, and budget; and establish governance, reporting, and compliance. The content maps to all four ECO domains.

What standard is the PMI-CP training based on?

The training is based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and aligned to the current edition of the PMBOK Guide and recognized construction industry standards and practices, as referenced in the PMI-CP ECO and Handbook.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The program includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, 230-minute format, plus topic-wise quizzes to help you identify weak areas and build exam readiness.

Do I have to complete the four required modules?

Yes. All four self-paced PMI-CP modules, Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management, must be completed before applying. Each awards 14 PDUs, for 56 PDUs in total, which also count toward renewal.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes. After meeting the course requirements you receive a course completion certificate along with the contact hours earned through the program, which support your PMI-CP application.

    Enrollment

How do I enroll in PMI-CP training?

You can enroll through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you receive access to schedules, courseware, and learning resources. See upcoming batches or talk to a learning advisor to get started.

    What training formats are available?

We offer online (live virtual) instructor-led training, classroom training, self-paced e-learning, and customized corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule and learning style.

Does the training satisfy the 35 contact hours requirement?

The core program provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours of project management education required across all three eligibility sets. Check with our team about supplementary study or pre-reading credited toward the 35-hour requirement.

Can I reschedule or transfer my enrollment to another batch?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch, and selected plans let you attend the training twice. Contact support to arrange this before your batch begins.
