What Is the PMI-CP Certification? The Global Standard for Construction PM

The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is the Project Management Institute's specialist credential for the construction industry, validating your ability to deliver complex construction projects from pre-construction through closeout. PMI-CP certification training in Uganda prepares site engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors and PMO professionals to apply construction project management skills across contracts, stakeholders, scope and governance. The credential is built on the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and the PMBOK Guide, and follows a unique two-part structure. Candidates first complete four mandatory self-paced modules, then sit a 120-question, closed-book exam covering Contracts Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Strategy and Scope Management, and Project Governance. For professionals working on Uganda's EACOP pipeline, standard gauge railway, expressways and fast-growing housing pipeline, PMI-CP is a globally recognised way to prove construction delivery expertise to local and international employers. How to Get PMI-CP Certified in UgandaStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-CP (PMI Construction Professional) certification path in Uganda is a structured single-exam track. You must complete the four-module training, document 3 years of construction or built-environment project experience earned within the past 10 years, then pass the 120-question, 230-minute PMI-CP exam delivered by PMI through Pearson VUE. From initial training to earning the PMI-CP designation typically takes 1-3 months.

Step 1: Confirm You Meet the PMI-CP Eligibility Requirements

Confirm you can document 3 years of on-the-job experience in construction projects or built-environment projects (infrastructure, real estate, utilities, etc.). The experience must have been earned within the past 10 years. There is no foundational PMI credential prerequisite for PMI-CP.

Step 2: Enroll in a Learning Program

Choose a learning format that aligns with your schedule and goals, such as a PMI-CP bootcamp, live virtual training, self-paced learning, or corporate group training. Enrollment provides access to PMI-aligned learning resources, study materials, and expert guidance.

Step 3: Submit Your PMI-CP Application via the PMI Candidate Portal

Create or sign in to your PMI account at pmi.org, complete the PMI-CP application, and document your training (32 contact hours) plus 3 years of construction project experience earned within the past 10 years. PMI membership (~$139/year) is optional but reduces the exam fee.

Step 4: Receive Application Approval and Register for the Exam

PMI reviews your application within ~5 business days. On approval, you receive eligibility to register for the PMI-CP exam through Pearson VUE. Your eligibility window opens for 1 year, during which you can attempt the exam up to 3 times.

    Step 5: Sit the 120-Question, 230-Minute PMI-CP Exam

Book a Pearson VUE slot , online proctored from home or office in Uganda or at a Pearson VUE test centre. The exam includes 120 multiple-choice and scenario questions across the four PMI-CP domains, delivered over 230 minutes. You receive your preliminary result at the end of the session.

Step 6: Earn the PMI-CP Designation and Plan CCR Renewal

After passing the exam, PMI issues your PMI-CP digital badge and certificate. The designation is valid for three years and is renewable via PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme by earning PDUs in construction and built-environment-relevant content across the 3-year cycle.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for construction project management. It is designed for construction project managers, site and project engineers, quantity surveyors, PMO staff and PMP holders working in construction. It validates the ability to lead projects across contracts, stakeholders, scope and governance.

    General

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for construction project management. It is designed for construction project managers, site and project engineers, quantity surveyors, PMO staff and PMP holders working in construction. It validates the ability to lead projects across contracts, stakeholders, scope and governance.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for professionals in Uganda?

Yes. Uganda is delivering a historic wave of oil, gas, rail, roads and building projects, and employers on EACOP, the standard gauge railway and expressways increasingly seek project leaders who can deliver to international standards. PMI-CP validates that construction-specific capability and supports higher-level, better-paid roles.

Is PMP required before taking the PMI-CP?

No. A PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary, with PMP validating broad project management and PMI-CP validating construction-specific expertise.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

PMI-CP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within the three-year cycle, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen.

How is the PMI-CP different from a general PM certification?

PMI-CP focuses exclusively on construction project management, unlike broad credentials that cover all industries. Its largest domain is Contracts Management at 50%, reflecting the central role of contracts, claims and disputes in construction, which makes it highly relevant to Uganda's large infrastructure projects.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in Uganda?

PMI-CP training fees vary by format and are available on request, so contact us for a current quote. The PMI exam fee is billed separately by PMI in USD under regional pricing and is not part of the training fee. Talk to a learning advisor to find the option that suits you.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams, guidance on the four prerequisite modules, application support and a course completion certificate with contact hours. Confirm inclusions for your chosen format with our team.

Is the PMI-CP exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PMI-CP exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing, with lower rates for PMI members than non-members. PMI membership also gives access to resources and can reduce your overall cost. Verify current fees on the PMI store before applying.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts for PMI-CP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction teams, PMOs and leadership groups. Ask about corporate or group pricing for a tailored quote for your organisation.

    What payment methods are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the payment option that works best for you.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO). It uses single-answer and multiple-answer questions across four construction project management domains, delivered online proctored or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes, which is 3 hours and 50 minutes. Results are reported with domain-level feedback such as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

The exam covers four domains per the PMI-CP ECO: Contracts Management at 50%, Stakeholder Engagement at 30%, Strategy and Scope Management at 15%, and Project Governance at 5%. Contracts management is the heaviest, so plan your study accordingly.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Your result is reported as pass or fail with domain-level performance feedback, so focus on broad mastery across all four domains.

How many attempts do I get and where can I sit the exam?

You get up to three attempts within a one-year eligibility window from application approval. You can sit the exam through Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre, which is convenient for candidates based in Kampala and across Uganda.

    Course Content

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four PMI-CP domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), plus claims and risk handling, exam strategy and application guidance. Do I need construction experience to take this training?

Anyone can enrol in the training. To sit the PMI-CP exam, PMI requires construction project management experience under one of three sets, ranging from 24 to 60 months depending on your education, plus 35 contact hours of project management education and the four modules.

What standard is the courseware aligned to?
