How to Get PMI-CP Certified in New ZealandStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-CP (PMI Construction Professional) certification path in New Zealand is a structured single-exam track. You must complete the four-module training, document 3 years of construction or built-environment project experience earned within the past 10 years, then pass the 120-question, 230-minute PMI-CP exam delivered by PMI through Pearson VUE. From initial training to earning the PMI-CP designation typically takes 1-3 months.

Step 1: Confirm You Meet the PMI-CP Eligibility Requirements

Confirm you can document 3 years of on-the-job experience in construction projects or built-environment projects (infrastructure, real estate, utilities, etc.). The experience must have been earned within the past 10 years. There is no foundational PMI credential prerequisite for PMI-CP.

Step 2: Enroll in a Learning Program

Choose a learning format that aligns with your schedule and goals, such as a PMI-CP bootcamp, live virtual training, self-paced learning, or corporate group training. Enrollment provides access to PMI-aligned learning resources, study materials, and expert guidance.

Step 3: Submit Your PMI-CP Application via the PMI Candidate Portal

Create or sign in to your PMI account at pmi.org, complete the PMI-CP application, and document your training (32 contact hours) plus 3 years of construction project experience earned within the past 10 years. PMI membership (~$139/year) is optional but reduces the exam fee.

Step 4: Receive Application Approval and Register for the Exam

PMI reviews your application within ~5 business days. On approval, you receive eligibility to register for the PMI-CP exam through Pearson VUE. Your eligibility window opens for 1 year, during which you can attempt the exam up to 3 times.

    Step 5: Sit the 120-Question, 230-Minute PMI-CP Exam

Book a Pearson VUE slot , online proctored from home or office in New Zealand or at a Pearson VUE test centre. The exam includes 120 multiple-choice and scenario questions across the four PMI-CP domains, delivered over 230 minutes. You receive your preliminary result at the end of the session.

Step 6: Earn the PMI-CP Designation and Plan CCR Renewal

After passing the exam, PMI issues your PMI-CP digital badge and certificate. The designation is valid for three years and is renewable via PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme by earning PDUs in construction and built-environment-relevant content across the 3-year cycle.

The Construction Skills You Will BuildAcross the Four PMI-CP Domains

This PMI-CP training builds practical, exam-ready capability across the four ECO domains. By the end you can manage construction contracts, engage stakeholders, control scope and risk, and govern projects to the standards employers expect.

Manage Construction Contracts and Delivery Methods

The skills covered in the PMI-CP start with contracts: you learn to assess contract types and delivery methods, administer contracts, and allocate risk across lump sum, cost-plus, GMP and design-build arrangements, the largest domain of the exam at 50%.

    Handle Variations, Claims and Disputes

Identify, document and process change orders, and manage claims and disputes for delay, disruption and differing site conditions through negotiation, mediation and adjudication, the areas that most often drive construction cost and delay.

    Engage Owners, Communities and Regulators

Build stakeholder engagement capability: identify and analyse stakeholders, manage owner and client relationships, handle community impacts, and secure regulatory approvals to keep projects moving, the second-largest domain at 30%.

    Align Strategy, Scope and Schedule

Define the project execution plan, baseline and control scope, and manage schedule, budget, risk and quality so delivery stays connected to owner objectives and contract requirements across the project lifecycle.

    Govern Projects and Assure Compliance

Establish governance frameworks, reporting and document control, run project audits and health checks, and maintain regulatory and ethical compliance so accountability is clear from pre-construction to closeout.

    Prepare for the PMI-CP Exam

Get ready for the 120-question, 230-minute closed-book exam with domain-focused practice, mock exams and exam strategy, plus guidance on the four prerequisite modules and the PMI application.

    General

What is the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) certification?

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist certification for the construction industry. It validates your ability to manage construction projects across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). It is aligned to the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the current edition of the PMBOK Guide.

Who should take the PMI-CP in New Zealand?

It suits construction project managers, contracts and commercial leads, site managers moving into project management, owner's representatives and construction consultants. It is built for professionals who deliver building, civil or infrastructure projects and want construction-specific recognition.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in NZ?

Yes. As New Zealand's construction pipeline grows toward a forecast NZ$65.4 billion by 2030, employers value certified construction leaders. Senior construction PM and director roles reach around NZ$140,000 to NZ$177,000 or more, and the PMI-CP helps you access them.

Is the PMI-CP recognised in New Zealand?

Yes. As a PMI credential, the PMI-CP carries global recognition across PMI's network in more than 200 countries. It is valued by New Zealand contractors, consultancies and public agencies delivering large building and infrastructure projects.

How long is the PMI-CP valid and how do I renew it?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years. To renew, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area, within the three-year cycle. The 56 PDUs from the four prerequisite modules can be applied toward renewal.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in New Zealand?

Training fees vary by format, so pricing is available on request. Your fee covers PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams and learner support. Request a quote or speak with a learning advisor for the option that suits you.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

Is the PMI exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing, for reference around USD 520 for members and USD 670 for non-members. Verify current fees at pmi.org, as PMI periodically updates pricing.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts for PMI-CP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction and infrastructure teams. Contact us for a tailored group quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that works best for you.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is closed book with multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats. It is delivered online through Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre, and covers the four construction project management domains.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes, which is 3 hours and 50 minutes. It is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

What are the four PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). The heavy weighting on contracts reflects how central contract and claims management are to construction delivery.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score and does not publish a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail, with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

What if I do not pass the PMI-CP exam the first time?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility window from application approval. Our practice questions and mock exams are designed to build your readiness so you approach each attempt with confidence.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the PMI-CP training?

You learn to manage construction contracts and delivery methods, handle variations, claims and disputes, engage owners, communities and regulators, align strategy, scope and schedule, and govern projects, mapped to the four PMI-CP ECO domains.

What are the four mandatory prerequisite modules?

Before applying, all candidates complete four self-paced modules in any order: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Each awards 14 PDUs, for 56 PDUs in total.

Does this training satisfy the PMI-CP education prerequisite?

The programme provides 32 contact hours, close to but below the 35 contact hours of project management education required across all three eligibility sets. Check with our team on whether supplementary self-study is credited toward the 35-hour requirement.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, 230-minute format, plus domain-focused revision so you can identify weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest PMI-CP outline?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the current edition of the PMBOK Guide, covering the four domains and construction industry practices as PMI defines them.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-CP?

Eligibility is two-part. You complete all four prerequisite modules, and meet one experience set: high school diploma plus 60 months construction PM experience, a bachelor's degree plus 36 months, or a GAC-accredited degree plus 24 months, each with 35 contact hours of PM education.

Is the PMP required before the PMI-CP?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary, and many construction professionals hold both.

How do I enrol in the PMI-CP course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. Talk to a learning advisor if you need help choosing.

Can I reschedule or transfer my enrolment to another batch?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch on selected plans. Contact our support team and we will arrange it for you.
