How to Get PMI-CP Certified in San JuanStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-CP (PMI Construction Professional) certification path in San Juan is a structured single-exam track. You must complete the four-module training, document 3 years of construction or built-environment project experience earned within the past 10 years, then pass the 120-question, 230-minute PMI-CP exam delivered by PMI through Pearson VUE. From initial training to earning the PMI-CP designation typically takes 1-3 months.

Step 1: Confirm You Meet the PMI-CP Eligibility Requirements

Confirm you can document 3 years of on-the-job experience in construction projects or built-environment projects (infrastructure, real estate, utilities, etc.). The experience must have been earned within the past 10 years. There is no foundational PMI credential prerequisite for PMI-CP.

Step 2: Enroll in a Learning Program

Choose a learning format that aligns with your schedule and goals, such as a PMI-CP bootcamp, live virtual training, self-paced learning, or corporate group training. Enrollment provides access to PMI-aligned learning resources, study materials, and expert guidance.

Step 3: Submit Your PMI-CP Application via the PMI Candidate Portal

Create or sign in to your PMI account at pmi.org, complete the PMI-CP application, and document your training (32 contact hours) plus 3 years of construction project experience earned within the past 10 years. PMI membership (~$139/year) is optional but reduces the exam fee.

Step 4: Receive Application Approval and Register for the Exam

PMI reviews your application within ~5 business days. On approval, you receive eligibility to register for the PMI-CP exam through Pearson VUE. Your eligibility window opens for 1 year, during which you can attempt the exam up to 3 times.

    Step 5: Sit the 120-Question, 230-Minute PMI-CP Exam

Book a Pearson VUE slot , online proctored from home or office in Puerto Rico or at a Pearson VUE test centre. The exam includes 120 multiple-choice and scenario questions across the four PMI-CP domains, delivered over 230 minutes. You receive your preliminary result at the end of the session.

Step 6: Earn the PMI-CP Designation and Plan CCR Renewal

After passing the exam, PMI issues your PMI-CP digital badge and certificate. The designation is valid for three years and is renewable via PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme by earning PDUs in construction and built-environment-relevant content across the 3-year cycle.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is PMI's specialist credential for construction project management. It covers four domains: contracts management, stakeholder engagement, strategy and scope, and project governance. It suits construction project managers, site managers and engineers moving into project leadership.

    General

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is PMI's specialist credential for construction project management. It covers four domains: contracts management, stakeholder engagement, strategy and scope, and project governance. It suits construction project managers, site managers and engineers moving into project leadership.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for professionals in San Juan?

Yes. With an estimated US$3 to 4 billion a year in reconstruction spending and USACE flood-control contracts flowing through Puerto Rico, San Juan employers increasingly prefer certified construction project leaders. Construction project managers here average around US$101,000, and the PMI-CP helps you qualify for senior, federally funded roles.

Which standard and edition is the PMI-CP based on?

The PMI-CP is built on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and the current edition of the PMBOK Guide, both published by the Project Management Institute. The ECO defines the four construction domains and their weightings, with Contracts Management the largest at 50%.

How is the PMI-CP different from the PMP?

The PMP is a broad project management credential covering all industries, while the PMI-CP focuses exclusively on construction, with Contracts Management as its largest domain at 50%. The two are complementary, and the PMP is not required before the PMI-CP.

How long is the PMI-CP valid and how do I renew it?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years. To renew, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area. The 56 PDUs from the four prerequisite modules can be applied toward renewal.

    Pricing

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee in San Juan?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams, guidance on the four prerequisite modules and the PMI application, learner support and a course completion certificate with contact hours. The PMI exam fee is billed separately. Request a quote for current pricing.

How much does the PMI-CP exam cost?

PMI bills the exam fee in USD and it is separate from the training fee. For reference, it is approximately USD 520 for PMI members and USD 670 for non-members, and membership is around USD 139 a year. Verify the current fees at pmi.org before you apply.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction teams, PMOs and engineering units across Puerto Rico. Talk to a learning advisor for a tailored quote.

What payment methods and instalment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

Are the four prerequisite modules included in the fee?

The four mandatory self-paced modules are purchased through PMI and their pricing varies by region and membership status. Our training prepares you and guides you through completing them, but confirm current module pricing at pmi.org.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is a closed-book, computer-based test of 120 questions to be completed in 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It uses multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats, based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

What domains does the exam cover and their weights?

The exam covers four domains from the ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is the largest, reflecting the centrality of contracts and claims in construction.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

How many attempts do I get if I do not pass?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility window from the date your application is approved. Our mock exams and practice questions are designed to help you pass first time and prepare for a retake if needed.

Where can I take the PMI-CP exam in Puerto Rico?

You can take the exam online through Pearson VUE's OnVUE proctoring from home or office, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Scheduling is done through Pearson VUE or the PMI portal after your application is approved.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the PMI-CP training?

You will learn to manage the full construction contract lifecycle, handle variations and claims, engage owners, communities and regulators, align strategy, scope and schedule, control cost, risk and quality, and set up project governance and compliance, mapped to the four ECO domains.

Does this training meet the 35 contact hours requirement?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours of project management education PMI requires across all three eligibility sets. Confirm with our team whether supplementary self-study is credited toward the 35-hour requirement.

What are the four mandatory prerequisite modules?

Before applying, you complete four self-paced PMI modules in any order, each worth 14 PDUs: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Together they award 56 PDUs applicable to renewal.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest ECO?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the current edition of the PMBOK Guide, so what you study matches what the exam assesses across all four construction domains.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes. After meeting the course requirements you receive a course completion certificate along with the contact hours earned through the programme, which support your PMI application and professional record.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-CP?

All candidates complete the four prerequisite modules, then meet one of three sets: a secondary diploma with 60 months of construction PM experience; a bachelor's degree with 36 months; or a GAC-accredited degree with 24 months. Each set also needs 35 contact hours of PM education.

Is the PMP required before the PMI-CP?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education, though many professionals hold both because they complement each other.

How do I enrol and what formats are available?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. We offer live virtual training, self-paced e-learning, classroom sessions and customised corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule. See upcoming schedules or talk to an advisor.

Can I reschedule or transfer to another batch?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch, and selected plans let you attend the training twice. Contact support to arrange this.

What is the refund or cancellation policy?

Refunds and cancellations are handled per our published policy, and selected plans include a money-back guarantee. Reach out to our team for the details that apply to your enrolment.
